Focus areas and Progress on Activities 2016 / 2017

In order to ensure that our focus areas are embedded within our company we have identified our activities for 2016 & 2017. These have been established as clear company objectives and targets, which ensures that we are all working towards the same sustainability goals and that we can evaluate our progress. Below is an update of our 2016 activities and our plans for 2017.


Caring for people

  • Health, safety & wellbeing

      Focus Activities for 2016/2017:
    • Protect the health and safety of employees and third parties.
    • Enhance our behavioral safety and employee health and welfare programs.
    • Implement and comply with corporate process safety standards.
    • Reduce loss of containment (LOC) events.
      Progress in 2016 and plans for 2017:
    • All manufacturing and operational facilities are now participating in behavioral safety programs and are on track with their programs of work to achieve compliance with the corporate process safety standards. These programs will continue into 2017 and be reviewed and validated by our corporate Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) team.
    • Manufacturing sites made good progress on the development of employee health and welfare programs in 2016 which included; health days, health and lifestyle education, dietary advice, free fruit days and stress management courses. Our employee wellness programs will continue into 2017.
    • Since 2015 there has been a 48% reduction in the LOC quantity. Our sites will continue with their LOC reduction programs into 2017.
    • In 2017, focus will be given to embedding the companies health, safety and environmental management systems into the newly acquired manufacturing sites and operations to ensure consistency across the Innospec group.
  • Employees

      Focus Activities for 2016/2017:
    • Reinvigorate the Employee Sustainable Development Network to help identify internal material issues and to embed our strategy and objectives within the business.
      Progress in 2016 and plans for 2017:
    • In 2016 the network comprising of 13 employees from a range of functions and global locations was re-established and took part in our materiality assessment.
    • A new managing other course was established in 2016 to help improve management skills for employees new to managing others.
    • Our second leadership program was held in 2016. The program is designed to identify and develop the leaders of tomorrow, ensuring the sustainable management of the company in future generations.
    • In 2017 the Network will help to identify effective communication and training approaches to increase the understanding and participation of employees in our sustainability programs.
  • Community engagement

      Focus Activities for 2016/2017:
    • Introduce the new Innospec Cares Program, which makes additional funds available to donate to charities and good causes as chosen by our employees.
      Progress in 2016 and plans for 2017:
    • In 2016, 14 of our global locations participated in the Innospec Cares Program, resulting in US$99,662 being donated to support 47 charities or good causes, local to our facilities.
    • In 2017 we will continue to promote the Innospec Cares program with the aim of increasing both the number of global locations participating and also the number of organizations supported.

  • Environment

      Focus Activities for 2016/2017:
    • Develop and implement a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy reduction program, targeting a 2% reduction in Group Scope 1 & Scope 2 GHG emissions by the end of 2018.
    • Review waste handling methods to maximize recycling, recovery and reuse routes and minimize the amount sent for direct disposal.
    • Identify and evaluate water reduction projects.
      Progress in 2016 and plans for 2017:
    • In 2016 we established an Innospec Energy Group and provided funding to support agreed 2017 energy reduction projects at a number of our manufacturing facilities with the aim of reducing GHG emissions in 2018.
    • All manufacturing sites now submit data on waste disposal routes, enabling targets to be set for reducing the amount sent for direct disposal and progress to be tracked.
    • In 2017 we will continue our on-going programs to reduce our resource use and increase the recycling / recovery of our waste streams.
  • Product Sustainability

      Focus Activities for 2016/2017:
    • Continued commitment and promotion of sustainable sourcing of palm oil and palm kernel oil based raw materials used in our products and increased transparency in our supply chain.
      Progress in 2016 and plans for 2017:
    • All our applicable manufacturing sites are Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Mass Balance supply chain certified, enabling us to offer and promote certified products to our customers, subject to supply chain availability.
    • In 2017, we will look to further understand our palm oil and palm kernel oil sourcing in order to facilitate increased transparency in our supply chain

      Focus Activities for 2017:
    • Improve the efficiency of our third party due diligence activities through the transition to an online automated platform.
    • Review current compliance online training program for alternative methods of training delivery, fresh course content and a diversity of languages to match Innospec’s needs.
  • Supply chain management

      Focus Activities for 2016/2017:
    • Conduct an evaluation of environmental, governance and societal risks present in our supply chain.
      Progress for 2016 and plans for 2017:
    • In 2016 we carried out phase one of our supply chain evaluation using the EcoVadis CSR rating platform to assess our top 50 raw material suppliers. Overall the Innospec supply chain scored better than the EcoVadis average.
    • In 2017, we will work with our suppliers to encourage improvements in any areas that fall short of our expectations and will initiate phase two, focusing on assessing suppliers operating out of high risk countries.
