Our Octane Additives business supplies tetraethyl lead (TEL) to the aviation market under our trade name Avtel. Our product fully complies with the composition and specifications laid out for such additives in the Aviation Gasoline Standards ASTM D910 and UK DEF STAN 91-90.

Using TEL in piston engine aircraft improves fuel performance and engine efficiency. For many aircraft it is essential for safe engine operation. Studies co-ordinated by the Coordinating Research Council Aviation Gasoline Group, of which we are a stakeholder, have shown there is currently no effective substitute to using TEL in aviation gasoline. While the use of unleaded automotive gasoline in light aircraft is permissible for a proportion of the General Aviation fleet, a significant number of aircraft can only safely be run on leaded fuels.

As the world's only manufacturer of TEL, we have made an absolute commitment to supply the product to the aviation industry for as long as it is required, even after we are no longer manufacturing tetraethyl lead for automotive fuels. Plans are already in place to ensure our plant can safely and economically manufacture TEL solely for the aviation market while it seeks a technical and cost effective alternative.
