Above Ground TEL Remediation Project in South Africa
The project consisted of dismantling, decontaminating and destroying 2 x 8 metre diameter vertical storage tanks, 2 x horizontal storage tanks and a 200 metre ship to shore pipe.

The TEL (tetra ethyl lead) was transferred into ISO modules for recovery at Innospec's manufacturing plant in the UK. The highly volatile and toxic sludges were manually removed from the storage tank into special 5 tonne waste containers.

The vertical tank was dismantled in position and the contaminated steel was sent to a second site for descaling and flame washing.

The second phase of the project was the inventory transfer of the TEL from the horizontal storage tanks. The tanks were transported to the decontamination site where the toxic TEL sludges were removed and decanted into the 5 tonne waste containers. The tank was cut into sections before descaling and flame washing.

The ship to shore line was cold cut into manageable lengths and transferred to the decontamination area where it was then hot cut into one-metre lengths. The pipes were manually de-scaled after which the pipes were flame-washed.

The full TEL remediation project work areas were completely cleaned and tested and declared lead free prior to returning the site back to the refinery. All decontaminated steel was sent off site for smelting.

The special 5 tonne waste containers were then shipped under the Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Regulations to the world's only licensed recovery process for TEL sludges at Innospec's Ellesmere Port site.

The project was safely and successfully completed without any Safety, Health or Environmental incidents.
