My name is Chris Burchett, and I am Management Accountant within our rapidly expanding Fuel Specialties business. My responsibilities include developing new systems, liaising with business managers across Europe and Asia-Pacific and reporting on a £100 million business. Over the last two years I have worked as a manufacturing accountant within all three of our business units reporting on accounts from plant level right up to business unit level. However, my present role is very different to the one that I envisaged at the start of my career. When I first joined Innospec in 2001, I worked as a Senior Research Chemist at Ellesmere Port focusing on process development, scale up to pilot plant and full manufacture. I had graduated from Oxford University in 1996 with a Masters degree in Chemistry and then worked in a variety of technical roles with another chemical manufacturer. However in 2003 my career started to take on a new direction. I moved to the newly formed Corporate Technology Department and became involved in analysing product patents, carrying out merger and acquisition work and reviewing our company's manufacturing capability. The latter involved developing a robust set of standard costs across the organisation. As a direct result of this work I decided to study for a company sponsored management accountancy qualification, which I passed in 2006. The rest is history as they say. It has been a great privilege to have the opportunity and support to move from R&D to Management Accountant within the same company.
Hi. I'm Helen Coy, the Safety, Health and Environmental Manager for Corporate services based at Innospec's Ellesmere Port site in the UK. I graduated from De Montfort University in Leicester in 1994 with a First Class Honours degree in Chemistry with Business Studies and began my career working within the hazardous waste management industry. I joined Innospec in 2000 as a Technical Manager for one of their Joint Venture companies based at Ellesmere Port. Two years later I was transferred over to our main business to carry out a variety of technical project management roles. In 2004, I spent six months in Corporate Development researching potential markets and acquisition targets. This provided some useful experience and knowledge of the various markets that Innospec operate within. At the same time I was responsible for conducting SHE due diligence for potential acquisition targets. My next move was into Active Chemicals where I spent a year in technical sales responsible for market research and sales of our Active Chemicals product ranges into Europe, the Middle East and Africa. As part of my career development I took part in a Field Sales Development Programme, which was most useful. Then in January 2006 I was offered the position of Environmental and Product Safety Manager within Corporate SHE. This was a wonderful opportunity, which I was more than pleased to accept. Since then my role has been expanded to include responsibility for corporate safety issues for all Innospec activities as the SHE Manager – Corporate Services.
My name is Ramzi Jouaneh. I have been the Regional Sales Manager for our Fuel Specialties business in South Asia and Malaysia since 2003. I am also the Marketing Manager for Performance Specialties additives in Asia-Pacific and Head of our India office. Taking responsibility for these different roles has proved an exciting and rewarding challenge. I never thought in 1998, when I joined the sales team covering France and French speaking African countries, that I would eventually be based in Singapore. Each step I took opened up new opportunities. So shortly after joining Innospec my sales responsibilities were extended to include the Middle East and I was asked to develop market plans and set up a direct and indirect sales structure to support our marketing strategy. I had to identify potential new customers and find ways to deliver increased profits. In late 2001 I was promoted to Commercial Manager of a new Innospec Joint Venture in India, based in Mumbai. This not only put me in charge of an entire marketing strategy for the first time. I was also responsible for budgeting and the profit and loss account. In 2003 I was promoted again, this time to Regional Sales Manager. I would certainly recommend a career with Innospec. I feel I have come a long way since 1996 when I left ENS de Chimie de Rennes in France with a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering. My other qualification is a Masters in Economics and Corporate Management from the French Petroleum Institute (IPF school) in Paris.
Hi. I'm Jenny-Ann Ostlund. I work for our Fuel Specialties business as a Technical Services Manager covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa. I am based at the Ellesmere Port site in the UK. Working for Innospec has helped me make the most of my scientific background and interest in research and technology. I joined the Swedish office in 1999 after graduating from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden with a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering. The company was happy to support me while I worked for my Doctorate. My research into fuel oil stability and fuel oil additives at the Department of Materials and Surface Chemistry at Chalmers resulted in a number of published articles. It also involved collaborations with other Universities such as NTNU in Norway and the University of Michigan in the United States where I spent three months as a visiting scholar. I found it very rewarding that my research also had practical benefits for our customers. After successfully completing my PhD I felt it would be good to become part of a large research department. Innospec supported this and I was given the opportunity to move to the UK and take up the role of Section Leader for Colloids and Emulsions. During 2004 I both led and participated in a number of long and short-term projects that concerned stability in oil systems and the development of additives to improve stability. In 2005 I was presented with a new challenge. I was promoted to Technical Service Manager for EMEA with responsibility for co-ordinating and re-organising Innospec's technical service department. Now that this has been successfully implemented I am focusing my attention on providing technical support for our Marine and Power teams, where new legislations are driving the market to change rapidly.
My name is Jackie Reid. After graduating from Strathclyde University in Scotland in 1994 with an honours degree in Chemistry, I joined Innospec as an Experimental Officer at their Ellesmere Port site. After four years in the job I was promoted to Senior Experimental Officer with responsibility for process development, pilot plant operations and then full manufacturing programmes. However, in 2000 I was given the opportunity to relocate to our Fuel Technology Centre in Milton Keynes as a Technical Officer. This role centred around customer and market support, providing answers to technical queries in the field and designing new additives to meet customer needs. It was challenging but good fun. After a few years, I was promoted again to Section Leader. I had to take responsibility for managing the section, providing technical service for key accounts and training for staff, agents and customers. This proved to be a real step forward in my career. At the end of 2005 I was invited to go back to Ellesmere Port but this time as Platform Leader in our Fuel Specialties business. It is a great job. I get to manage the development of new products to meet current and future business needs and manage our short, medium and long-term research programmes. Who knows what my next career move will be but I am sure it will be with Innospec.
Hi, I’m Christian Uerkwitz. In January 2007 I was delighted to be appointed Senior Sales Manager for our Heating Specialties business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The job gives me the opportunity to use my marketing experience to the full as well as take responsibility for managing the German sales force. I have worked for Innospec all my career. I joined as a student at the Herne site in 1991 while I was studying for a Master in Business Administration degree in Economics at Bochum University in Germany. After graduating in 1995 I was promoted to sales representative with the then newly established Marine Specialties team. In 2001 I was promoted again to Marketing Services Manager for the global Marine business. This role was extended a year later to include the global Power business as well. During this time I was involved in the launch of new brands and gained first hand experience of using various marketing communication tools, from new media to print media and public relations. In 2004, I agreed to take over the Marketing Services responsibility for the entire Fuel Specialties business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This involved providing marketing support to our sales teams and managing our marketing communications activities internally and externally. We wanted to raise our profile across various markets in different countries. My current role, as Senior Sales Manager for our Heating Specialties Business, feels like a natural step along an exciting career path. I enjoy it immensely.
Hi. I'm Kaushik Vashee. I work for our Active Chemicals business, managing the plant operations and maintenance at our Salisbury site in North Carolina. I'm the Site Manager. I've been working for Innospec for over five years now after joining the company in April 2002 as Director of Engineering at our High Point site. My background is in Chemical Engineering. I graduated from Southbank Polytechnic in 1986 with a BSc (Hons) in the subject. To give me greater commercial and business insight I then took an MBA course at the University of North Carolina, where I graduated in 2000. My career with Innospec has been varied and interesting. After two years at High Point I moved to the UK on a nine-month secondment to work on a project at our main manufacturing facility at Ellesmere Port. Working with the site team, I was involved in improving the efficiency of the performance chemicals plant. We changed the maintenance program around and adapted various process and management systems in order to boost performance and reduce running costs. I learnt a huge amount. Then in 2006, when I was back in the USA, I was given the opportunity to take on the additional role of Technical Director at our High Point site, alongside my Plant Manager responsibilities. This was essentially a new 'inside' sales role aimed at boosting our sales effort. My job was to review a customer's technology and provide feasibility recommendations on how our products might offer greater benefits. After 15 months in this exciting and challenging environment, I was promoted to my current position of Site Manager for our Salisbury site. I ensure all our plant operations and maintenance programs are delivered with maximum efficiency and minimum cost. It is a great job. By working for Innospec, I've had opportunities to advance my career without having to move outside the company."
I'm Colin Wardropper. When I left school in 1992 I joined what was later to become Innospec's aroma manufacturing site in Widnes as a junior laboratory technician. I found the work suited me and to further my career prospects I decided to study part-time for a BTEC National Certificate in Science. Within 12 months I had passed the exams and found myself promoted to Laboratory Technician. My next challenge was to train to be an odour evaluator. This involved understanding our product portfolio and the 'good' and 'bad' odours connected with processing. I had to develop an 'odour memory'. By 1995 I had completed my BTEC Higher National Certificate in Chemistry and was promoted to Senior Laboratory Technician. I then set my sights on taking a degree and after four years hard work I graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with an Honours degree in Chemistry. Further promotions followed. In 2002 I was given the role of Process Development Chemist in our R&D laboratory and then in 2006 I was asked to take up the role of Plant Technologist. In 2007 I was promoted to my current position of Customer Service & Logistics Manager at the Active Chemicals Widnes site. My job today includes setting up the site sales and operational plan as well as planning all of the raw material deliveries to site, based on current production run rates. I am also responsible for ensuring our customer service is of the highest possible standard and that our plant processes reflect our customers' needs. Who would have thought that raw school leaver would have reached such an important management role.
